Russell Johnson – RIP

I’ve always had a thing for Russell Johnson. As a kid, of course, I knew him as the professor.

“I was at a speaking engagement for MIT … and I said … the Professor has all sorts of degrees, including one from this very institution! And that’s why I can make a radio out of a coconut, and not fix a hole in a boat!”

Fortunately, I outgrew Gilligan’s Island really fast, but I never lost my crush on the professor. Thank goodness for his b-movie acting career which gave us:

Steve Carlson in This Island Earth

Steve Carlson in This Island Earth,

Joe Gamble (for whom I can’t find a pic to save me) in The Space Children,

and my personal favorite,

Hank Chapman in The Attack of the Crab Monsters

He should have been the lead in that last film. Way more interesting than Beverly Garland’s ex-husband. I always felt bad for him that he most often played the sidekick or third wheel (or drunk abusive stepdad) in these movies. Look at that rugged face in that last pic. *sigh* So dreamy.

Anyway. Bon voyage, Mr. Johnson. You will be missed.

  1. I haven’t watched much in the way of B movies, but I confess to loving Gilligan’s Island. I think the part of the Professor was an example of why it was good to be smart, and that was helpful to lots of kids.

    He will definitely be missed.
